How to Stop My Teeth From Staining

Oct 13, 2023

Ways to Avoid Stained Teeth:

Avoid Food and Drinks That Discolor Teeth

Certain food and drinks contain pigments that can discolor the enamel on your teeth. Examples of these are coffee, tea, and red wine. Foods like pasta sauce, blueberries, cranberries, and tomato ketchup can also stain teeth. If you do consume these items, be sure to rinse your mouth out with water afterward and brush your teeth properly.

You can also incorporate crunchy fruits or veggies such as apples or carrots into your diet. These will scrub your teeth and can act as a natural stain remover.

Stop Smoking

Smoking not only stains the teeth, but it can also lead to gum disease and cancer. Quitting smoking is beneficial for oral health in many ways. If you need advice on how to quit, be sure to speak with your general practitioner.

Rinse with Water After Eating

Rinsing your mouth with water is the simplest and easiest way to clean food particles after eating. This will prevent staining from drinks or foods that you may have consumed during a meal.

Brush Regularly

Brushing your teeth twice daily is essential for keeping them healthy and preventing tooth staining. Be sure to use fluoride-containing toothpaste and brush for two minutes each time.

Use an Aftermeal Mouthwash

When brushing isn’t an option, try using a mouthwash like Listerine after meals to fight off bacteria that can cause bad breath. Certain types of mouthwashes are also designed to help whiten teeth.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Regular visits to your dentist are important for detecting any issues that may be causing tooth stains or other problems. You should schedule an appointment at least twice a year.
