Everyday Invisalign Maintenance

Apr 02, 2021

Invisalign is an easy and discreet way to straighten your teeth. Your aligners will serve you well in your orthodontic treatment, but it is important to understand how to properly care for them. We’ve put together some of the top-rated orthodontist tips for caring for your Invisalign.

Avoid abrasive materials when cleaning Invisalign

Your aligners are made from plastic material that can be scratched or clouded by abrasive materials. Avoid using a denture cleaner, mouthwash, or soap to scrub your aligners. The ingredients in these products are abrasive and can make your invisible aligners dull, making them stand out.

Clean your aligners regularly

Just like you brush your teeth daily, you need to get into the habit of cleaning your aligners each day. Use toothpaste and a soft-bristle brush to gently clean your aligners. By cleaning them daily, you are removing bacteria that can cause tooth damage or lead to other health issues.

Soak the aligners every day

Just like cleaning, soaking your aligners makes them more hygienic, odor-free and keeps them from getting dull. Place the Invisalign crystals in a cup of lukewarm water, place in the aligners, and soak for 15 minutes. Brush the trays off when time is up.

Rinse your aligners when you remove them

Your aligners become covered in plaque and saliva while you wear them. When you remove them to eat or drink, it is important to rinse them to prevent them from growing bacteria.

Brush and floss after removing your aligners

You want to remove plaque and food debris from your mouth before putting your aligners back in. If you don’t brush and floss prior, you can develop issues such as cavities or gingivitis.

Keep your case handy

When you aren’t wearing your aligners, they should always be stored in the case. This will help keep them clean and prevent you from losing them, which could delay your treatment.

Don’t eat while wearing your Invisalign

Your aligners can be removed when it is time to eat, so there is never a reason to eat or drink with them unless you are drinking water. Eating or drinking can cause staining or damage to your aligners, making them less clear and more visible.
