Do I Need a Retainer After Braces?

May 06, 2022

After braces or Invisalign, you will need to wear a retainer. This will help prevent the teeth from shifting. One of the biggest mistakes that patients can make after having their braces removed is not wearing a retainer. Without your retainer , your teeth will shift, and you will require orthodontic treatment to fix the issue.

Retainers are required after any type of teeth straightening, regardless of the method.

What Should I Expect After Braces or Invisalign?

After your orthodontic treatment, your teeth are partly held in place by your jawbone. During your orthodontic treatment, the jawbone softens or disappears, also known as resorption, allowing your teeth to move into the final positions.

When you stop wearing Invisalign or have your braces removed, wearing a retainer will allow your teeth to be held in place as new bone is deposited. It can take anywhere from 9 to 12 months for the body to build up enough bone to stabilize your teeth in their new positions.

Tips for Wearing Your Retainer

Taking care of your retainer is crucial to your oral health and preventing damage to your retainer. It is important to follow the instructions provided to you by your Pittsburgh orthodontist. Thes instructions may include:

  • Wear your retainer often
  • Clean your retainer
  • Brush and floss your teeth
  • Use your case to protect the retainer from damage

Your retainer should be rinsed off throughout the day and should e washed often. You should also make sure it is out of reach of pets, and you should remove it before physical activity. Proper oral hygiene and keeping your retainer in its case will help prevent the build-up of bacteria.
